New Romantics

Okay, New York is over, London Fashion Week has started and like every year I'm slightly overwhelmed by all of it. When I finally find the time to look at some of the shows (I'm way too slow for live stream so in the end it's mostly slide shows for me) I find it difficult to get a grip… What are the coming trends? What am I seeing here? (What I like and what not takes a bit longer to figure out.) Lots of black , surprisingly strong early 90s influences, artificial furs… It looks like there are two strong trends going on – urban amazon (black leather, sharp cuts, deconstruction) and cosy chic (long skirts, soft colours, wooly sweaters) - all connected by - the to me always slightly stuffy seeming fabric - VELVET?!? Well then, let’s get cosy…

So what's your take on velvet? Oh so soft and lovely or only good for bathrobes?

You can see how much fun I'm having with my new remote control. Now I need to learn how to hide it.

Sabine, I just adore your photos here. You look so free, so fun, so happy! Love the softness of your outfit and your cute, bird-like posing! :)

I find it hard to interpret the trends straight off the catwalk. How do all those bizarre shapes and teeny waists relate to me?! I like your polarised version - very helpful! Velvet leggings tempt me somewhat!

Velvet leggings - I love the idea! But I know what you mean, Jen. I often look at the collections and they don't seem very appealing (at first). It takes a while to find one's own personal approach.

Yeah! I was suprise my self to see so many velvet fabrics and those long skirts..I have one apprehension regarding toward the fact that not everyone can wear long skirt! Well lets just wait and see I think :)

i tried checking out the runway collections and i can't find a strong semblance to spring..except maybe for a few. and there's no connection too..it's like everybody's trying to do something different...i guess it all boils down to us depending on our personal style. *wink*

I have velvet dresses but have never had a velvet bathrobe!

I love velvet but would use it sparingly in my wardrobe. It's a beautiful fabric to work and play with. I have designer friends who use velvet in their collections. And it works wonderfully. But still, Mumbai heat is prohibitive.

Hi there-love these pictures of you!! I had a velvet bodycon dress in the 80s which I loved, but sadly got rid of. I'd go velvet if I found the right piece though!

Thatsorad - Thank you! Yes, I was wearing the trousers here and since I made them myself I thought they should get a bit more credit.
SR@MyStyle - That's the real challenge, isn't it? Finding the RIGHT velvet garment. I will have to raid my wardrobe (and perhaps do some shopping. Vintage velvet sounds attractive...).

I am so into velvet at the moment. I have my eye on quite a few velvet dresses!

The force at which fur is coming back is incredible...

Velvet is one of my favourite materials, too bad I don't have much of it. I would love a velvet headband and a lovely velvety jacket:)

You look so comfy and cosy in this! So great that you have a new remote too!

Love your comfy chic home outfit! I've only glanced at a few runway shots, but to be honest, I'm just not ready to start at more wintery clothes. I've had enough of this season and just want Summer to arrive.

Having said that, I always associate velvet as being a bit outdated and also somewhat unflattering. I think it's really something that needs to have an edgy feel or else it will just look outdated. I saw the A. Wang pieces, but I think they will mostly likely not look as great on the average woman.

I LOVE these velvet pants!!! Hmmm, my take on velvet? I love it as a thin, black, simple, slip dress, or as these pants in your post, or deep emerald in the form of a skirt!

Ooh what lovely crinkly crushed velvet. Very lovely colour combinations too. I like velvet if it is in the right colours. I’m not so keen on darker shades of the fabric as they remind me of curtains or the velvet rope.
