Gimme Shelter

Over the weekend I finally found the time to start thinking what the a/w fashion shows are about. Interesting colour combis, ubiquitous olive, boobs at Prada and 'normal sized' models, velvet everywhere, thigh highs and over the knee boots, flat shoes, black leather, often a strong early 90s vibe, and - fur! Real and artificial, sheepskin lapels and teddy bear coats. Lots and lots of fur.

Though I have a few furry items, personally I can’t really see myself buying into the trend too much* (except perhaps for vintage pieces). I'm quite glad I still have my mum's old coat though...

How do you feel about this trend. Is fur for you? Would you only wear artificial fur or does it have to be 'the real thing'?

*The gorgeous sheepskin jackets from Burberry and Co. being an exception.

coat: vintage, hat: vintage, pony hide gloves: maledetti toscani

Your gloves are the best. I'm actually desperately craving some leopard print gloves right now!

I like fur, but in moderation. It's so easy to look cheap/overdone, and that's why I'm not so tempted to go for a fur coat any time soon. If I do opt for a fur coat, I'm gonna make damn sure I don't resemble a cheapened version of Cruelle D'ville! I agree with you that vintage is defo the way to go in terms of fur...

Yes, love the gloves, too. I bought them in the height of summer in Italy and couldn't wait for it getting cold enough so I could wear them.

I can't abide fur - it smells. I was in H&M in Oxford St near Selfridges and a lady was wearing a fur coat - it stank and I did feel sick.
I like shearling though.

Honestly, I was surprised by the amount of fur. Understandably many people have very strong emotions (or other reactions) towards it.

such a beautiful photo! oh yes, the elusive pull of fur... i don't mind real or faux, but if it's real it's got to be vintage. and sometimes the real stuff just seems a bi too real and that sort of freaks me out. i am totally happy with faux, but not the really horrible cheap stuff that sheds everywhere... decent quality faux is good. xx

The gloves are fabulous. As for fur, I have a leopard print faux fur jacket that I absolutely adore. I'm not sure how I feel about real fur - I recently passed up on a real fur collar in a vintage shop because I just couldn't bring myself to wear it.

I adore fur - but only if it's faux. I wouldn't wear real fur. You look absolutely dazzling, darling - as per usual!! :)

The coat on the photo is gorgeous!I must confess that I adore fur... The real one, not faux... But sadly, I don't wear it in England because it's not "right". For me, it's not a trend, it's a neverending love for a timeless beauty, so I'd adore it no matter what the rest of the world thinks or says about it. :)

Hi there-I love faux fur but I do have a real vintage fur which I do really love too.

I love your discussion based posts! Firstly gorgeous coat. I wear vintage real fur although I am yet to buy any new fur. I like the new trend to brushed shearling as it looks luxuriant although slightly more ethically sound than wearing real fur being a by-product of the meat industry

I want that gloves!

give me those gloves!!!

i have some fake fur, but not much. wait? do i have any fake fur? i have a cute leopard jacket (or is it cheetah -- who can keep all of this straight), and i think it is just fabric.

there was some story on npr this morning about how much fake fur is really from cats and dogs. EKE! that kind of gave me the willies!

What a beautiful coat. I've been looking for a nice fur coat, but now that winter is coming to an end I might be able to get one for a cheaper cost somewhere. Yours is beautiful

I love the leapord print glove...stunning!

As for fur...I thinks its not very versatile and cannot be worn everywhere...not my thing!

Cheers!

I'm a faux fur girl. I remember seeing something about how they skin the animals, and I've been completely scarred for life. And, it's just me, but I feel super uncomfortable in fur. Though I don't feel the same about leather or snakeskin... (though i saw a snake devour a mouse whole when I was younger, and I've been scarred from that too....)
You look lovely as usual!

Pratishtha Durga said...

Faux fur, yes. I have my reservations about fur, but don't really go the extreme way. I appreciate a good fur design, but feel bad about the animals skinned. there are so many more trends to choose from.

I don't think I would ever buy real fur, mostly because its so insanely expensive. I do have a vintage rabbit fur coat my grandma gave me, which is the only real fur I own...I love it because it keeps me super warm in the winter.

But I think faux fur is the way to go. It's cheaper and more ethical. :)

BoyUndSchwester said...

I don't like new fur, but fake isn't much better because it's made from petrochemicals. Perhaps if it was truly ethically raised I wouldn't mind?

I do think vintage fur is ok though, why waste something already in existence? Buying it doesn't support the modern fur trade.

Those gloves are fabulous. I love it. If the weather in my country would permit me to wear fur, I'll say vintage fur is the way to go. xoxo
