So Long, So Good

Psynopsis Harriet Wearing Rick Owens Dress

Psynopsis Harriet Wearing Rick Owens Dress
Long skirts or dresses have never been for me – ok, perhaps for going to the opera. But generally they just don’t seem practical and the hippie-ish side of it doesn’t appeal much to me, either. I remember inheriting a beautiful floor length 70s dress from my mum and all I could think of was to shorten and to tighten it. (Now every time she passes one of her clothes on to me she makes me promise not to cut it up).

But when I wander through London these days I see more and more long skirts – not so much the floral, thin and swinging ones (they’ll probably come out in summer), more straight, narrow and sleek. And I have to admit, the girls are looking pretty chic. May’s UK Harpers Bazaar also features floor length and reports that Anita Barr, director of womanswear for Selfridges, thinks Rick Owens has the best versions. I think it's time to get out my Rick Owens dress.

Are you going to wear maxi this summer?

Love the dress. I've been thinking about a Rick Owens one lately, but still not sure, as I'm rather short . . . we'll see. Still, I think you could totaly pull it off.

Thank you, Ioana. It's my Rick Owens dress (perhaps 2-3 years old) and I asked Harriet to wear it. She just seemed to have the perfect body for it and is such a beautiful model.
But I think I'm going to wear the dress this summer, too.

i have just bought a few maxi dresses for this summer. but i like mine plain, none of the wanna-be-a-bohemian look for me! ;)

Lis-x- said...

I used to think the same as you! They are scarily overpowering at first, but when you notice others wearing a casual maxi dress, it looks so laid-back, and def. not overpowering. I've bought 2 in the last three weeks haha.

Thank you so much for the blog comment, it means a lot to me!=)

I'm thinking of getting a plain maxi dress just like that! It looks real sweet on Harriet:)

Oh i have definately noticed a trend towards long skirts and dresses too. They were so in, in the 90's which unfortunately was a good this. I'm enjoying the sleek shapes now a day but not sure how practical it would be for me

This is just gorgeous. I've never worn long length skirts or dresses but I really want to give a maxi dress a go this summer. I've spotted one in H&M that would be perfect! :)

I love this look on some people, the tall, leggy girls. I just don't think this would look so flaterring on me. But I can totally see you hitting this look out of the park!

brooke said...

wow! this is exactly in my mindset - I'm making maxiskirts tonight! black and grey jersey. slightly gathered. mine are for winter though! (I'm in australia)... I'm so looking forward to them, they just look so damn comfortable and whatnot. these photos are so gorgeous, you look stunning! and not hippie at all, haha.

I fell in love with maxi dresses when I lived in Barbados and Jamaica. I am so awaiting summer so I can dress up and swan about in my long, silk/cotton dress;-)

Romany said...

Is this you? What a beautiful dress - I'm not a huge fan of floor-length but this is just divine. I recently bought a maxi-dress, blue and white floral. It's the only maxi I've ever owned, but it was just too lovely not buy.

great photos!

@ Romany - No, that's not me but lovely Harriet. She happened to be in the house when I was wondering how to put my Rick Owens dress in a picture and I asked her to put it on(she wasn't allowed to comb her hair nor put make-up on, which she found just cruel of me). (I'm the small, not so long-limbed one struggling with shoes 30th or playsuits, 31st March).

I'd really love to wear a maxi dress, but I just get the biggest feeling it's not gonna suit me. This girl looks lovely in this dress

I love this dress! You're a great photographer too :)

I wish I could pull this off but alas, I'm 5"4! haha

I've got 4 maxi dresses and one maxi skirt to wear this summer all vintage or old purchases.

Your example is promising. Loved reading about Londoners too. Nevertheless, I think that I'll still need some serious getting used to the lengths. I am - as well as the Sweetie pie - fervent mini gal. But fads often do get to me.

xoxoKrysten said...

Being short, I always feel like I shouldn't wear long dresses. But sometimes I can't help but love them.

Harriet said...

I used to be majorly in to maxi skirts when I was 17 and wore them everyday to school, so I think I'm holding back from the maxi at the moment because it reminds me too much of gonig backwards! I think I may give in though, they are just lovely, and I like the idea of swanning around in loads of fabric again!

Love this Maxi dress, i will need to buy one too now. It look so good:)

I really like that dress, but being short will never allow me to wear long dresses or skirts and look good :|

Wow... you look absolutely stunning in this dress. If I can look even remotely like you then I am converted to long dresses for sure. Amazing!

She is gorgeous and so is that dress. I, however, will not be wearing a maxi this summer. I always feel slightly strange when I wear floor-length dresses given the fact that I'm just slightly over five-feet tall. :)

I love wearing a long bright maxi in the summers especially if I am going somewhere tropical. xoxo

I love maxi dresses ... they're a nice change to the tight short version.
Long and flowing in the summer is very cool. I love the sexy black number in the photo!

Wow those photos and the dress are so gorgeous! I will definitely be wearing floor length skirts this summer, especially when I can't be bothered to shace my legs.

I don't think I could ever do the maxi..who knows :)

Kb said...

I agree it looks chic, but I can't help thinking that I'd need to be taller to carry it off. Maybe I haven't found the right style yet? Definitely willing to try things out...I love the simplicity of the style in the picture.

Clare said...

I do love a maxi dress! But I agree they are not for everyone. Gorgeous model!

Kristin said...

I am crazy addicted to maxi dresses!

Brandi said...

I've honestly never been one for long dresses either, but I think that's all about finding the RIGHT long dress. And I think this is one of those dresses. I love how form-fitting it is. Gorgeous find.

I have the same feelings that you do about long skirts and dresses. However, I have to tell you that the one your are wearing is really pretty and it is elegant more than anything else.

I think so! I used to wear long skirts all the time back in the nineties (cry) so I can do them. They just feel funny at the moment! I did buy a gorgeous long skirt from the Dispensary, which was ridiculously overpriced. So I'm glad to get the chance to wear it!

(lovely photos btw.)

Great dress! I don't know would I follow that trend, if I find some nice dress and if it fits me then I would :)

Audrey Allure said...

I would definitely wear maxi dresses if I could find one at the right length haha. Everything I find is either too short or too long lol, but I do love the look of them!

Maxi never been my 'thing' but this year I have already designed long maxi jersey dress , not floral as I 'm not floral lover but white : )

I'm tall and feel much more comfortable in long dresses. I like them tight and sleek, although honestly, I rarely do wear dresses.

yes, i love long dresses... i do think the cut has to be right, but if it is then you have a perfect versatile basic!

Pretty! I would love to be able to wear a long, lovely skirt, but alas, I am only 5'3" and fear I cannot carry them off with the justice they need...
