The Traps of Online Shopping

Psynopsis Lover Trousers New Look T-Shirt Topshop Blazer DIY Denim Bag
How often has it happened to you that you bought clothes online and when the item arrives, you put it on and think: 'Mmmhh, I don’t think I'd bought that in a shop; BUT now that it's here, I'll make it work.'? Really, I think if there is one big disadvantage to online shopping, it's the reluctance to return things.

Case in point are these trousers. They looked cool on the website; exactly what I was looking for – laid back, easy to wear, tummy space… In reality they are anything but. The material is scratchy and the cut is plain cheap. I guess they might look good on a very boyish figure, but me they give huge hips and my bottom looks totally unshapely in them.

But even more than scratchy trousers I hate wardrobe corpses. So I'll try to wear them anyway. They are comfortable enough, I can even stalk around the woods with them. I'll just hope no one secretly sniggers at my puffy behind.*

*I know it's vain, but no way am I giving you a picture of this. I also happily admit that I tried to make them look as good as possible in the pictures.

Oh Sabine, tell me about it. I buy most of my stuff online (I don't know when and why it actually started) and at least 3 miss-buys come into my mind. There are these pants which are a liiiittle bit tight, but I kept them because I wanted to loose weight anyway (never worn ever since). Or that dress that I kept on altering until it had totally lost its shape. I totally feel with you.

but: great pictures and i love your bag!

Kazuko - I'm totally with you. It's tricky. Especially when the postage costs are high or there is no free return...

Um.. Gorgeous freakin DIY bag! :)

You're so right! That's why I try to stay away from online shopping. But if I can't, at the very least I look for a flexible return policy where I can go into a brick & mnortar shop to return the item. Otherwise, I stay away...Victoria 's Secret - I'm looking at you!

I love all the green here! I have that happen alot...online shopping is sometimes simply out of boredom, more than anything else and I end up returning.

Oh I can't tell how horrible they really are. You wear them well sweetie. But I can totally relate to what you're saying. I've been burned many times. Now I usually pretend that I'm going to buy an article of clothing online but then I never actually click the complete purchase button. I leave it in my cart for a while until I forget all about it. That way I get the thrill of shopping without the consequence :)

SogniSorrisi said...

Its hard to buy certain things online. The pants look great on you!

Elizabeth said...

I might have these same exact pants...except I bought my in the store, and now I call them "no butt pants" because they make my butt look horrible.

Valerie said...

I feel the exact same way about online shopping. Once I get it in my house, it's so hard to deal with the return shipping, boxing it up, extra money to ship it, etc. I think the trousers are really cute on you! But I know what you mean.

Haha I have never heard the expression 'wardrobe coprses' before. Brilliant. I hate that too and always try to wear the items anyway. But now before I left Sweden to come to Paris I gave away ten sacks or more to charity. With clothes, shoes, bags... gave it to charity. So hopefully I dont have anymore corpses. But lord I miss my wardrobe now. It's packed down in boxes in my attic :(

Daphne said...

Yes! I do the same thing. So silly. I have to say you did a great job of making the pants look lovely. I can't even imagine them looking less than great! Sorry for the lack of commenting, by the way! Still in london. I'll be home and at my computer come Monday!

I don't really do online shopping with clothes, but I like the top you are wearing in these pictures!

Dancing Branflake said...

What? Huge hips? You aren't huge anywhere. If you are then you disguise really well. You look cute and I love it. But, if you don't feel comfortable then I can see why the pants would be annoying.

can't say i've ever done that actually, i always send stuff back if im not 100%, i used to but ended up with way too much stuff that i didn't wear. i do think they suit you though

I know what you mean about online shopping, but i think it's always difficult to judge how things will fit in real life as sizes, shapes and materials can alter the fit. I still think you look great in them & i really like the top.
P.S these pictures of the country side are beautiful. This wouldn't happen to be New Forest? ;)

I have had many mishaps with Online purchases myself; nevertheless, I continue buying from the Web - it's somewhat of an addiction, I suppose.

You look lovely in this ensemble; though I'm sorry to hear that the material is scratchy - that's the worst. Can you return them? :/

theredcurry said...

I know how that feels like, and I usually buy from the UK, and I'm from Portugal. To return things, means to pay again for postage, and I don't trust sending anything without being registered. So it's expensive to return things. But we learn from our mistakes..

S.Elisabeth said...

Aw they definitely do NOT look bad on you! But I hate when material is itchy or uncomfortable =(

Tuesday said...

I know what you mean about by buying online that's why I hardly buy clothes unless if it's only available on the net.

Your trouser looks alright on you though, not too bad at all... love your forest concept, it looks very mysterious...

"wardrobe corpse" - I love it! You have made my day with this expression. I'm going to dig up mine and eBay or charity shop them. xx

Aaaah yes. I know this all too well. The hassle of returning things from online shops is usually far too great - leaving me with a wardrobe full of unworn, unflattering clutter. eBay is my answer!

I actually think you work these trousers pretty well, and I'm loving your new countryside location! x

i love shopping on line, but i think only 50% of it works out. the returns are a PAIN IN THE ASS, but still i keep doing it! so much easier than going shopping in person. or is it? i don't know, but i still love the on-line thing!

Classic Copenhagen said...

I suspect they count on that reluctance to send it back. It took me quite a while, and some very expensive mistakes to finally return online stuff. Today I finally got that denim Gap dress I spotted over at Lenoreevermore, and it is just a little too big (but only in some places). Dammit. But now I washed it, and I am going to force-wear it if I have to. I refuse to write it off. :-) Sandra

Heeeello, I'm back. Thank you for your feedback on online shopping. I'm actually a big online shopper - not only because I'm lazy and like shopping on the sofa, but also because I like trying everything out at home. But why did I choose this silly title, I wonder? Doesn't matter...

@ Cocktail of fashion - Not quite the New Forest, but the woods at the East Sussex/Kent border. May is such a beautiful month for nature!

SabinePsynopsis said...

See Sandra - we already had that thing with the Sonia Rykiel jumpsuit. Although I didn't buy that online, which just shows that these mistakes can happen no matter how you buy things.

1. You look gorgeous, as usual.

2. The trousers look great, even if they don't feel it (that's typical, of these things - I feel the same about clothing that's not what I expected.)

3. The first picture in particular is beautiful.

More tree climbing! Yay! I love your t-shirt. I appreciate the "edge" of a printed t-shirt with the femininity of the ruffly sleeves.

Classic Copenhagen said...

Haha, it's true. By the way the pants needed no sewing after cutting, once I washed them, they finished the edge nicely off themselfes. Now you no longer have to lie awake at night wondering about that detail. :-) Sandra

I love the nature shots! And CUTE shoes!

SabinePsynopsis said...

Abigail - Yes, I do love this t-shirt, too (and that it was only a fiver makes it even more attractive).

Classic Copenhagen - Phew, I'm so relieved. Finally sleep again!

I do not purchase items of clothing online. One of my very simple rules. But I'm so sorry to hear that these trousers are so disappointing. From the photos one cannot tell anything about its quality and fit. I think you did well by wearing them to the woods for a photo-shoot. Very fitting if you are not so keen on them in the first place. It's wonderful to see you bouncing around in the woods, though, and your bag is quite lovely, too. Have a fun and relaxing weekend, sweetie! XX

I completely and totally agree! I too have fallen victim to loving it on the on line model and not being impressed with the item on me. I find that happens a lot with Victorias Secret, won't know why ;)
I think that you look super fantastic in this outfit. I love your poses and your new photo location. You are the essence of cool as always!

Well I love that bag! As far as online shopping - just tell yourself you have 1 week to decide/return. If it doesn't work remember that's $$ for ANOTHER item you may want down the road (-:

Krysten @ After 'I Do' said...

Ugh, I do the same thing. I bought a swimsuit online a little over a year ago but it was too tight. Rather than return it, I just told myself I'd lose weight.

Never lost the weight. Ended up giving the suit to charity.

WTH. So dumb.

Hi Sabine!
Thanks for your kind words.
Loving the setting of the photograph and the bag and outfit look amazing.
I tend to get carried away on "Ending Soonest" on eBay buying stuff just because it's cheap. I've received the most bizarre items.

This is weird. I SWEAR I had left a comment on this post but I haven't been receiving post-comments so I thought I'd check and... :(... blogzheimers. Again.

These are such beautiful images! You look like a wood nymph. I have never mentioned how much I love your hair colour and when you do these "in the woods" images, the contrast is so beautiful.

As for the trousers... I've had a similar experience and I also held on to them but, in the end, they're lining a charity bin somewhere..

Online shopping for me is a nightmare. I end up spending so much more money on getting whatever I buy tailored, that I rarely bother with it.

You look gorgeous in a natural setting!

Love the term 'wardrobe corpses', it's so appropriated !
I'm proud of me because the other day I wore PANTS. And not super short shorts or skirts. So yay for me!
But that's really not the point ;D
I actually think these trousers don't look bad at all, you still manage to be very fashionable!!
