Can I Join the Club?

You know how embarrassing it is when someone shows up all geared up and then turns out to be totally rubbish at whichever sport they are trying to channel? There are about 1001 movie scenes reminding you to avoid this situation, which is also (one of) the reason(s) I normally play tennis in some old slacks and a t-shirt. On the other hand I’m often so frustrated with my game (and already admitted to actually crying because of the often huge gap between my inner vision and reality) that I thought a new tennis dress might give me a bit of a mental boost; plus naturally - do I even have to mention it? – I always fancy a new dress.

Watching the Roland Garros tournament in Paris last week gave me lots of opportunities to look at the latest tennis fashions (and made me realise that you have to be a top-notch player to not look ridiculous in a yellow frilly tennis dress à la Ms Jankovic), but what really sent me to sports fashion heaven is the new Y3 Yohji Yamamoto for adidas campaign. I mean, just look at them… Aren't Zinedine and his friends just the picture of cool? I eagerly checked out the
website; but - OH NO! - not a tennis dress in sight. (You can play tennis in pretty much anything, as long as it a) has pockets, b) is stretchy and c) is short or at least not bulky; but none of these designs are tennis compatible.)

In the end I made my own tennis dress by sewing an adidas top to an old t-shirt. Can I now join the Y3 club, please? I’m even prepared to swap sports.

i could honestly never see myself playing sport for any reason ever (besides compulsory sport for school), although i find Wii Sports to be a lovely alternative :) you look so fantastic! that's got sporty written all over it :) have a wonderful week ♥

Pure genuis, I love your dress. Much better than a gold one ;-) Xxxx

Sportswear (or anything sports related for that matter!) is something I know very little about, but you look fab in your DIY tennis gear. As for the Sookie Stackhouse books, there's nothing wrong with reading that! Actually, that's on my reading list too. I'm looking forward to the new episodes of True Blood this summer ;o)

Dancing Branflake said...

I can't believe you made that! You never cease to amaze me. And how was your arm? And seriously, can we take a moment to admire your awesome calves?

SabinePsynopsis said...

Chantelle - Thank you. You look lovely without sports!

Fashionistable - Ahh, the gold dress, might still be on my list. But only if my game improves to Serena Williams style.

Maddy - Me too!

Dancing Branflake - Thank you! When I play a lot it gets worse but right now I'm just so keen on playing, so it's lots of Ibuprofen cream and arm wrapping.

Looking very sporty there, Sabine! I think your dress is great. I like it when women dress up a bit on the tennis court, but can't say I particularly enjoyed seeing Ms Williams in her frilly dress and nude panties.

I'm a sucker for old, worn sportswear myself. I like looking scruffy when working out. Whenever I go for any kind of training, I usually put on an old and heavily worn T-shirt and some jazz pants. (Apart from in the pool, that is..haha)

Sabine, you really ought to be a clothes designer, you know;-)
I never look so striking at the tennis court - must be doing something wrong. Yes, indeed, must remember to contact Sabine for hand-made tennis outfit;-)

Love your creativity! And you're right, one must be confident and capable in their sport in order to pull off a "look". Have a beautiful week. =) Thanks so much for stopping by and enjoy your summer filled of tennis, photography and reading. That sounds rather nice to me.

Um, HELLO- you made that? You always make it sound so simple but I know it isn't! You look amazing and I want to start playing a sport just for the outfit options, is that wrong?

Love Y3 and I think your outfit fits right in. And YES, a new outfit of any kind makes you play better - that's a given (-:

You did a great job on your dress! It looks amazing on you. I'm the same way, I feel like if I dress the part, I'll be better at the sport. Unfortunately, it doesn't usually work like that for me. Haha.

i love what you did! it looks fab, and you look fab in it!

i have a friend that is pretty good at tennis. we were shopping one time, and i got REALLY EXCITED AT ALL THE FAB TENNIS OUTFITS. really excited. and i was telling her to get this and get that and get the other, and she had to put the breaks on me. she said being to dressed up on the court raises expectations. hahaha! i am betting that is true!

I always do that when I take a new dance class and I never look quite as chic as all the other dancers in their broken in dancewear. But I think your tennis outfit looks great and functional.

tennis dresses are uber cute...but nothing beats the teeny tiny traditionalism of white pleats and a tiny collar...

As for Venus and her dangly earrings? I am all for dangles and earrings...actually I adore them, but...I can conceive of nothing worse than playing for a tennis open title and having danglys that could be ripped out of your ear by an overzealous backhand or a 80m/ph serve!

No thank you!

Like you blog, Fashion, Art and Other Fancies introduced me.

You are SO cool! LOVE this (of course), I think this is my fave outfit so far! Agree totally with your observation, the more fancy gear someone shows up with, the worse of a player they are! I wonder though, you weren't tempted by the flesh-colored bloomers a la the Williams sisters? ;)

Krysten @ After 'I Do' said...

That outfit is super cute!

I'm not much of a sports player simply because I am totally uncoordinated.

I've always loved the tennis inspired look, though when I played, I definitely didn't wear frilly dresses (it was shorts and a tank top all the way). Do you know McQueen actually had tennis dresses a few seasons ago? I almost bought one but my size sold out too quick. And let's face it, Zidane would look pretty cool in any outfit he wore ;-)

I think tennis players have the best outfits - call me shallow, but those flippy white skirts and cute socks are fab! x

It's sexier than my sports gear - leggings, an elastic headband and a lifejacket aren't really a good look for me!
