Grey Matter

Oh, the joys of budget airlines… after queuing for 2 hours with lots of other annoyed/ frustrated/ nervous/ hysterical/ wildly phoning-texting-talking-shouting passengers who were all trying to figure out how and when to get to Berlin* I was told the flight was cancelled because of an over-worked crew. Weeeell, as much as I value security, how about organising? But ok, I'll make my way to Gatwick airport again tomorrow and the involuntary delay gave me a chance to reflect on extremely important matters… nail colours.

All my life I've been putting some red Chanel nail varnish on my toe nails in summer and that was that. But lately I’ve made a discovery… There are other nail colours on the planet! I might be the latest of late comers, but now there is no stopping me… First it was blue, now I found grey.

And because I’m still in Vreeland mode I'm wondering: Why don't you… build your wardrobe around your nail colour? (And why do linen trousers always look frumpy on me?)

*We were offered flights to Hamburg instead. Nice place, too – just not where I wanted to go.

trousers: deyk, top: la redoute, cardigan: h&m, shoes: next, nail colour: rimmel 805 grey matter

Love gray polish. And yes, I have been known to build an outfit around a nail color. : )

You look amazing in gray! And those trousers are not frumpy at ALL. I LOVE them!

Thank you, Leia. Not frumpy? There is something about the linen crinkle that always irritates me, but it's a great fabric to wear for sure!

I am a huge fan of Vreeland, and especially her "Why don't you". There has been no one so revoulutionary and flamboyant since, do you know she used to paint her earlobes red with a blush?

I used to mix my own nailcolors, when I could not find what I wanted, and I still use my nailpolishes as enamel, when I play around with my costume jewelry. It really pops much more than ordinary paint, mmm.

INTRO TO MY LIFE said...

you look great and i feel like gray is a very chic color, one of my favorite

SabinePsynopsis said...

Intro to My Life - Thank you!!!

Sandra - Did she really? I'll try that (painting my earlobes) - pics to come! (You see, I want to be flamboyant, too.)
I've tried mixing nail colours, but find that sometimes the don't like each other chemically and the varnish becomes a bit strange, e.g. looses its gloss.

what a desaster - your cancelled flight of course. nice of them to offer you hamburg /: as if you would fly only for the money.

love your grey outfit - it makes your red hair glow! and as for the nail varnish: it's really become a part of my outfit. and since i'm picky and also a bit conservative and not really daring i always try to kind of match my nail polish with my clothes - when i recently bought my first real colour (nude and beige don't count) i even built my whole outfit around it.

and linen btw always looks frumpy - no matter the shape or size. but your pants look frumpy in a good way :) the fabric give them the laid-back attitude.

Fashionistable said...

Sorry to hear your flight was cancelled. Frustrating. How long are you away for this time? I tend to always go for red too. However the grey looks good. I have seen a lot of people wearing a kind of flourescent pinky orange this summer too. Hope you have better luck at the airport tomorrow. Xxxx

That's an interesting thought! To build an outfit around the nail color. I will have to try that! ... And grey looks very soothing for these summer days :) And don't worry linen is fine on you :)

Dancing Branflake said...

I hope you get a flight! And I think you look fab in linen pants.

RepublicOfChic said...

I've been known to build an entire outfit around a nail colour! When it's grey I'll wear only pinks or yellows. Must try a monochrome like you :)

I'm diggin the editing in these pics :)

drollgirl said...

you look AMAZING in grey! it is a lovely neutral. sadly i look like a corpse in grey. bleh! i have to throw in some color somewhere or people might think i am dead. frustrating.

and i have worn pink polish on my toenails for eons. i recently tried a silvery taupe color, and my niece told me i look like i had a fungus on my feet. so i went back to pink. blergh! :)

SabinePsynopsis said...

drollgirl - actually I thought grey looked a bit like fungus, but maybe that's just because I'm a novice to non-red nail colours...

Kazuko - I am struggling with linen, it's so sensible German somehow... (I'm allowed to say that being German, no?)

Fashionistable - I'm only away for a few days. I was invited to some Berlin Fashion Week activities, but it's all a bit squeezed now. Mmmh...

Sorry about the flight delay, but I guess better safe than sorry...no? Though I would love to see my office shut down for "overworked staff"... ummm yea...that's not happening!

I'm still stuck in the red nail polish phase. Though grey seems cool, not sure if it's for me.

First of all, thank you for the shout-out below! An honor to be mentioned on your fabu blog, oh, and I really like being a favourite, not a favorite, it makes me feel very worldly and cosmopolitan ;). I have always been a red toenail polish girl myself, but I am down with the gray, I also think I would try a metallic blue, just for fun. Great outfit, not a frump in sight, from here! Hope you feel better and travel safe! XO!

SabinePsynopsis said...

So right, Maddy - the idea of flying with a pilot whose doing an 80 hour shift isn't that appealing.

Shari - More than welcome. Favorite, favourite... color, colours... Let's keep it cosmopolitan!

Ooh, I love the way your nail polish matches your ensemble, Sabine. To be completely honest, I always build my wardrobe around my current nail color!! :)

mmmm, gray! i suppose it's my favorite color. it's a striking contrast with your lovely red hair. i've built certain looks around a new nail color myself. fun.

pertaining to your latest comment on my blog: the age related topic appeared in the recent comments on StreetStyleLondon; and then she wrote about it in subsequent posts. i normally find it boring, but this time it brought up a few other related topics, such as cuteness, body image and societal "norms". interesting conversation.

Sorry to hear about your flight/travel disaster, sweetie.
hamburg is a nice city; one could drive from there to Berlin.... Ok, that's not your idea of fun. LOL!

I love your grey on grey. Grey looks good on you and the nail varnish, too. See I'm too dark for grey. I tried a lovely grey dress on. Fitted perfectly but grey needs fair hair and skin me thinks;-)

Haute World said...

I used to wear a lot of dark grey nail polish, but have gone back to black/purples for now. Love your outfit, though I have the same issues with linen trousers. Sorry for being MIA recently. Too much traveling! Though if you were going to Berlin, wouldn't a train from HH only take 1.5 hours? Still too much hassle though...

SabinePsynopsis said...

FA&oF and Haute World - You're absolutely right. It's only another 1.5 hours, but when you are going for more or less 48 hours (and have booked a direct flight) 2 extra hours is too much travelling time for me.

Haute World - very curious where you've been lately. Hope to find out more soon on your blog!

If only I can be good in applying nail polish, I would definitely build my outfit around nail color. I wouldn't mind changing colors everyday... that would be cool.

The grey polish is awesome... and the grey outfit is just so effortlessly chic.

Have a great day! xoxo

Well, I think it's great that at least you're enjoying a sunny summer in England this year.
I've only been to London once, and the three days we were there, it rained. Oh well.
As for the nail polish, just wait until you get to the pastels, you're gonna go nuts :p

And haha I know what you mean. I've spent my whole teen life sticking to the red/pink nail pallette and this past year I've discovered the beauty of black and tiffany blue and bright orange!
And creating a wardrobe around a nail color isn't a bad idea...
