Life | Let the Knitting Commence

Psynopsis Central St Martins Holborn Bathroom
In situations of stress or excitement where do you go? Exactly, to the bathroom! Which is where you could have found me before my machine knitting course started this weekend. Ahh, smelly toilets… reminded me of school, of an atmosphere dedicated to learning and creativity. It's been too long! The knitting machines are difficult beasts – at least for me. It seemed all the others had already finished their first sweater (kiiidding, we don’t 'do' sweaters. We think outside the box.... it's Central Saint Martin's, dammit) and I was still fiddling and breaking needles. But thanks to ever-patient, awesome teacher Berni I got it eventually, and then, believe me, there was no stopping anymore… A world of endless purly possibilities has opened.

Your creation looks interesting! Great colours - I've always wondered about doing a short course there but equally always been a bit intimidated to sign up - would love to know how are you finding it!

Thanks for the kind words on my last post, everyone put a smile on my face. I wish I could knit!! My Mum is always making blankets and scarves etc and I've tried to learn but am utterly useless when it comes to arts and crafts type things. Need one of these machine in my life!!! I am going to say the same thing which everyone above has said ... makes me feel repetitive but couldn't come up with a new phrase to say that "looking forward to your knitting' :)

SabinePsynopsis said...

Ha ha, I might disappoint you and not come up with anything (or not think it worth showing).

Eeeeek! I'm so jealous. It looks so awesome. What machines are you using? I have a manual 80s knitting machine that I got off Freecycle. It's ok but pulls on one side so everything I've tried knitting it uneven.

SabinePsynopsis said...

We started with the normal domestic machines, most of which are Silverscreen. I changed to a Brother though - though they are the older models, they seem sturdier and I like them better (struggling anyway). One thing’s for sure… There are 101 ways to make mistakes.

How exciting sabine...and a bit frightening too i'll bet! Can't wait to see how that piece shapes up. It's looking a little missoni-ish, i'm a total sucker for their knitwear.

Haha, I remember those knitting mashines :) They can make you go crazy until you get the feeling for them. Lucky you for being a student at Central Saint Martins!

Oh, darling, congratulations on a new course! I am absolutely in love with your pictures, trying to absorb every single little detail of the creativ chaos! I can not wait to see great things knitted by your fabulous hands: just to think of combination of your taste and ability to knit - I can only imagine the fantastic end result!

Veshoevius said...

Are you doing an intensive week? Wouldn't that be great to coincide? God so much I'd like to tackle on a CSM short course (though not much of knitter myself) - design using draping techniques on a mannequin, learning to use my camera properly and wondering also about the styling for beginners one - choices, choices...

Oh wow, this is so cool! I'm learning to knit right now :)

Hmm, this is so interesting! How long does it take to machine knit something, as compared to hand knitting it?
