I thought the best way to start a new life is to 1) move to a different country, 2) start a new job and 3) throw all your belongings into a friend's shed and forget about them – which worked perfectly until friend needed the shed and we were faced with a massive amount of old stuff… What did I need 20 yoga mats for? And did I really develop films in this little black box? And, oh look, pictures of happy days in Australia! I haven't missed any of these things in the last 8 years, but can't bring myself to throw them away either.
After all this schlepping I feel the urgent need for a new pair of shoes. Ideally Camilla Skovgaard's dinosaur soles – but they're a bit out of my financial league; which is why I ordered 3 pairs at Yoox. (1 to keep, 2 to return – something that never works out.)
How do you deal with old things – keep, give away, storage, ebay...?

I'm super-ruthless when it comes to clearouts (amazed I haven't thrown away my passport and birth certificate before now!). When it comes to clothes and shoes, there are 3 choices; Mum, eBay, charity shop. I do it every 6 months (at least) - hate clutter (even if it's out of sight in a cupboard). xx
Spending the last 15 years in shared houses and tiny flats has sorted my clutter. eBay or charity and sort every six months
Impressive! I think I really need a lesson in ruthlessness...
20 yoga mats... that explains a body like yours. as for the old things: keep a couple of small things to remind you of good old times (and as a reminder for you not to keep and collect EVERYthing), give one part to friends and family, another part to charity, the things that you really don't want for ebay and the rest - throw it or even better: burn it. :)
Giveaway for sure- it brings good energy back to you- those shoes are fabulous.
I'm a hoarder by nature...but proud to say I've given to charity lately!
Hope & Shall do more major spring clean up soon, Sabine!!
But then I think if I loose my job I might want to start teaching yoga again... & my mum is a messy, I surely can't give her any more things. But will try, will try!
For every new item I introduce I have to sell or giveaway at least two. I've still got a shed filled with stuff from my last house move, I daren't look at it. xxx
i would say momentos like photos keep. the rest if u havent used it in 8 years you wont for another 8.
Old things if they are worth it I give to charity. If they are rubbish they go in the bin. Wonderful shoes - 3 pairs :-) Xxxx
Keep! I am not a minimalist. I keep everything and my husband just suffers.
I'm dreadful Sabine. I pretend i'm clearing it out, but really I'm just moving it around the house... and then eventually the garage. Our garage is terrible...so much furniture and bits that I'm holding onto just incase. There's even an antique safe there...ummmm...somewhere...
x
Ps. Do you send the rejects back? You're very good if you do. Once I had them in my clutches (providing fit was good and I actually like them) I wouldn't be able to let them go!
Vint Junky - Me too! & I fear that's exactly what I'm going to do - but that would be half a month's income... So I just have to hope they don't fit or I don't like them.
Ebay and charity.
The soles on those shoes are just incredible!! I'm terrible for throwing old stuff away, I have so much clutter in my room it's crazy. I try to do a big spring clean ever few months and just have to go through one of those crazy states where I don't care what goes (that doesn't happen often). My advice is to not tackle the stuff until you're in a 'I DON"T NEED IT' sort of mood. I normally give stuff to charity shops, but if it's probably worth a bit than eBay. Good luck =)

Fabulous shoes!!!. I keep, give some away to family and friends, and sell on Ebay. I have been selling for about 4 year now.

There a few things I'm not willing to toss out at some point or another. Clothes hold no sentimental value to me. Now, pictures and letters? That's a whole another story!
donate to goodwill or sell on consignment, depending on how current the items are.
exciting shoes! i hope we'll see a post of whichever pair you keep.
xo
It is great to spring clean every year. I still have bags that need to be delivered to Goodwill. This way you have room more new things! Those dino heels are amazing. I am shocked that you buy 3 pairs all at once. How does that work? I have been eyeing those Jil Sander FW floral boots...
Joy - Oh no, I didn't buy 3 of THESE... I couldn't even afford 1 of these shoes.
Oh! Dilemma. Some keep and then one day during a change of heart throw whatever reaches.my.hand. away!
ebay / chazza shops, it's never ending
Hi my dear-I'm lucky I'm not a hoarder, so a lot of my stuff goes to the charity shop. Have done a big declutter of the cupboards and have a lot of rubbish for the dump now!! Hope your shoes are fine for you! xx
I'm a dreadful hoarder - so is Mr V - every so often we have a clearout but not enough of one - a lot of stuff is at Mr V's parents!
I'm the worst at purging...I did just clean out my closet recently though...and it DID feel good!
I'm a terrible hoarder, always thinking I will wear that again one day but a good clear out is therapeutic.

Oh I sometimes think hoarding is better than me. I always end up throwing away things I want.
I'm a fan of throwing things out--so much so that loved ones often take things out of the pile or trash to save for me. I'm not particularly sentimental, you see. Only the best stuff goes on ebay or gets sold other places--photography equipment, Hermes scarves, niche perfume, etc.
Good luck sorting it all out. Release is good!
Funny you should come up with this post just a few days before my big garage Sale where I am pretty much emptying my life. I even started a separate blog for it. (www.lifein2suitcases.com)
It's great to let go of stuff.
recently went through a throw it all away let it go day. Feel totally empowered post that ! :)
You ordered three pairs of Camilla's shoes?? Or just any shoes? But like if it's camilla's that you ordered, I'm seriously super jealous!
I didn't know you used to live in Australia, that's so cool! Did you surf and all that stuff? :)
(there's a giveaway on Feathers now if you want to enter it!) :)
I have just moved into a new apartment, which has kept much of the clutter at bay. The other motivation driving me relentlessly towards the charity bin is the fact that I'm moving to New York at the end of the year. Given I plan to stay in the US for a couple of years, the thought of forking out my hard-earned cash for a storage container here in Melbourne is enough to keep me ruthless!
But don't worry - you aren't alone. Normally I am a complete horder!

Filipa - Nooooo, I haven't ordered 3 Camilla shoes... I would need to change my job and go into banking before I could afford her shoes. Yeap, I did live in Australia - when I was a child and in the late 90s for a while. I did some surfing courses (so much fun!), but I'm really frightened of sharks. Absolutely love boggie-boarding though!
When I figure out how I deal with old things, I'll tell you. I have so much stuff--and I'm adding more to it all the time--it's beginning to get annoying, not to mention unmanageable. I've kept most (not in storage--on my bedroom floor), but I sell stuff, mostly through Ebay, once a year.
I like the shoes. I've never ordered from Yoox before, have you (before today, of course)?
Ashley - Have to admit I'm quite the Yoox addict. The website has gotten better and better over the years. Delivery is super reliable (with UPS) and returns are easy to organise.
Ah I need to do a massive clearout myself! I wouldn't mind adding these shoes to my collection though ;)
Liking the shoes.
oh, i store and store--- all the day long. ;) what i have too much of is clothes.. but i keep wanting new things. but now i try to instead of buying new things, to go down to the basement and switch closet clothes for clothes that i store in the basement. it's like going shopping all over again ;)
hope you're having a good beginning of the week
xx
storage is my middle name, i'll me a rich girl if i can bring myself to sell them, but even if i do i'll just buy more shit.
i hope your haveing an amazing week
sounds like you deserved a pair of shoes!!
those are FABULOUS
I love the way you write! With old stuff - I like to keep it to go through year after year, but I'm finding that I have a problem with clutter and really should start releasing myself with all the stuff. It's tough though, it really is!
keep these babies!!! i looove my skoggaards...
my new years resolution this year was to stop buying EVERYTHING... and only things I need and will actually make use of. I did a huge closet cleaning at the end of last year and sold all my stuff to thrift stores or gave away to family... saddest yet most liberating day ever.

I actually have that problem with all of the stuff I still have in boxes in Scotland. I will go through it at some point and just throw away stuff I really no longer wear or use... there's really no point in keeping things otherwise. I've always loved Skovgaard's shark heels - you can actually get them cheap fairly easy at all the London sample sales near Brick Lane and Covent Garden.
you just reminded me that I need to purge my closet and my garage. Ugh. I tend to donate, ebay and resale boutique so it all doesn't feel like such a loss. Wish I could be one of those people who wears/uses EVERYTHING they purchase but sadly that isn't the case... Not I just feel bad. OK done talking about this. LOL On to your shoes - AWESOME!!!
oh! i hold on to my things ... haha, like old granny! on the other hand, i am not an impulsive shopper, so i guess most of things i do acquire tend to stay with me ... but, since i am opening an ebay store soon, guessing some of my stuffs will end up there!
We have quite a bit of basement storage space, so anything I think that we (or my kids) might use and enjoy again someday, gets kept down there.
But I donate a lot of things to Easter Seals, too -- once or twice a year they send a truck around, and they'll pick up boxes and bags of items left in front of the house. So, in the basement I also have a huge "donations box" for clothes, books, questionable decorative items that I want out of the house. I'll go through it when I receive a notice from the Easter Seals, and anything I'm still sure I want out of the house, goes into a container for pickup. I can't think of anything I've really missed after donation.
I love the idea of cash from Ebay or a yard sale, but I hate the idea of people picking over my things, haggling, and complaining about the items. I'm too soft to sell...so I donate and take a tax deduction.
