London | MyFavouritePlace | Jazmine | V&A Museum

Psynopsis MyFavouritePlace Jazmine Jazzabelle's Diary V&A
If I said Jazmine is one of the most popular English bloggers and a London 'It Girl'*, regularly being featured on asos.com and in all kind of other magazines and catalogues I guess I would be totally right, and I know she would totally hit me because that's really not the point for her. Yeap, she's a super gifted stylist (having done an amazing job styling all shoots in the soon-to-be-released Anna Wilkinson knit book and getting to the semi-finals of the Asos future stylist competiton) – but the thing about Jazmine is that she's incredibly down-to-earth, unpretentious and lovable. She also is a great advocate for 2nd hand shopping and loves the V&A Museum, especially everything of and around William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement – and I'm so happy she took the time to show me some of her favourite spots in the museum…

My favourite place is... the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington.
It's special because... it's like a second home to me. It's just such a lovely place to visit, I pop by as often as I can. It's full of so many beautiful pieces and every time I wander around the museum I discover something new and exciting.
The best time to come is... on a weekday afternoon, when it's a little more quiet and peaceful. Plus visiting on a rainy day just adds to the beautifully gloomy atmosphere of the museum.
Don't miss... The current Ballgowns exhibition in the newly renovated Fashion Galleries, the British Galleries (featuring some of my favourite William Morris pieces!) and of course the wonderful gift shop!

My favourite smell is… my vanilla body mist from The Body Shop. I wear it every day and it really compliments my current perfume, Dior Hypnotic Poison.
I love to shop at… Battersea car boot sale on Sundays. I've picked up such amazing bargains from there over the years!
I love to drink/eat at… Il Molino, my local cafe on Battersea Park Road, where I often pop by for a cappuccino and a slice of cake. The decor is so pretty and conveniently it's directly opposite my favourite charity shops!

My friend Kay and I we're working on this real fun art calender project – which means visiting a lot of weird and wonderful places, seeing interesting works of art and thinking of the strangest best way to portray it all. I'm in love with the beautiful studios – and so want to share, but shhh! So just a sneeky peek… ♥ ♥ ♥

Psynopsis MyFavouriteThings Pink Flowers
The sun's out and there are flowers in abundance… cute blossoming jumpsuits, happy springtime dresses, blooming trousers… But it took hours to find something flowery in my wardrobe… Ah look, there's the crumpled self-made jumpsuity thing!

1+2) Only after a few years did I realise that these pretty flowers are mean weeds and impossible to keep in check – now I rip them out by the dozens and put them in vases.
3) Old, old scarf bought long ago at KaDeWe Berlin. Works well as a belt, too.
4) Byredo’s black rose… Still addicted.
5) I'd love to know more about this teapot which has been with us for ages. At the bottom it says 'MR 1939'. It's very frail and I think it's very beautiful.
6) Sometimes all you want is a pair of cheap and happy earrings.
7) The self-made jumpsuity thing, aka a rarely worn DIY project made from an Armani fabric. It's not that bad actually - the silk is very light, very see-through and makes me feel SO summery…

What do you think? Floral - yay or nay? ♥ ♥ ♥

London | MyFavouritePlace | Kate | Southbank

Psynopsis MyFavouritePlace Kate McAuley Tate Modern
When I met Kate the first time I felt immediately connected because a) she's from Australia (where I lived as a child), b) her husband is a good cook (if times get too hard mine will have to bring in the dosh as sushi chef), c) she loves to travel (so do I, but she actually has lived and worked in all these places… Papua New Guinea, Japan, Dubai, Cameroon…). Kate is also incredibly cultured (I think she sees more theatre, concerts and opera in a week than I do in a year) and has just finished her first novel 'Walking Distance' (not her first book, mind you), and she's one of the nicest people I've ever come across… (and dang, I want her hair!). Here are Kate's London tips...

Psynopsis MyFavouritePlace Southbank Books

Psynopsis MyFavouritePlace Southbank 2nd Hand Books

My favourite place is… Southbank. I know it's cheating but I can't pick just one thing I love.
It's special because… When I first moved to London in 2004, I worked near London Bridge. Being an Aussie, I like to be near water. Whenever I could escape the office, I'd walk along the Thames to clear my head.
The best time to come is… Fridays – it's too crowded on the weekend and Borough Market is open.
Don't miss… The grocer at Borough market who sings Italian arias beneath the train tracks. The Wright Brothers' Oyster and Porter House for brilliant seafood. The Tate Modern and Millienium bridge. The booksellers under Waterloo Bridge. The Globe. The typical London views. I could go on and on and on.

I couldn’t part with… People aside, my favourite books. I've carried them with me through nine international moves.
My favourite smell is… bread baking, coffee brewing.
I love to travel to… anywhere. New places and new faces are a constant craving.
My favourite city is… London. I'm from Sydney and have lived and travelled all over the place, but London makes me the happiest.
I love to drink/eat at… home. My husband is French and English and a master in the kitchen. My second favorite place (this week) is Bob Bob Ricard in Soho. I was taken for the first time there recently and fell in love.
I love to shop at… home. I'm an online shopper all the way, though I spend far more money on books from Amazon than anywhere else.
The best thing I bought lately was… a cream blouse from Cos. It was an impulse, but I can't stop wearing it.
My current favourite read is… too hard to nail down. I should say something challenging and literary, but I've only just fallen in love with reading again having finished writing a novel. The book that got me back on track was The Distinguished Guest by Sue Miller. She's an American author who always delves beneath the fabric of human interaction in a very adult way (and no, I don't mean dirty). I love all her books.
My favourite website… I'm in love with Pinterest. It's made my life so much easier. You can find me here.
Cat or Dog? Both. I love all animals. I only have a cat at the moment because I don't have the time to give a dog all the attention that he or she would need.

I thought I was done with the maxi length, but then my bestest friend send me her mum's dress – custom made in the 70s… or as the label says 'made for you by Paula & Mopitz Ibiza'. THE infamous label!! It looks like it could do with some sun though... add a bikini and my Italy wardrobe is settled. Love you, K! ♥ ♥ ♥

dress: paula & mopitz. I think all their dresses were shorter in the front and longer in the back. If you're interested there's some fun information about Armin Heinemann and his boutique here and here.

People | Kate, Tate & Kusama

Psynopsis Kate McAuley at Tate Modern

Psynopsis Kate McAuley and Sabine Menzel at Tate Modern
Thanks to Kate's wonderful Tate Modern membership card I had the luxury to avoid all queues and finally got to see the Yayoi Kusama exhibition – which is preeeetty mind-blowing. I guess as an artist you need a degree of obsession, but she really is way out there – not only because of 'the sex thing'* and all the dots and because she has been living in a mental hospital for the past 35 years... Her infinite creativity is just beautiful to behold. Maybe you've already been or seen her art somewhere else, but if not and you have the chance - it's well worth a visit.

The Tate member's café was also the perfect place to interview Kate about her favourite places in London – which will follow soon – with proper, not only oh-look-we-can-see-ourselves-in-the-window views. ♥ ♥ ♥

Yayoi Kusama exhibition, Tate Modern London, until 5th June 2012. (Sadly no photography allowed)

*which to me seems more a fertility theme, but then, sex and fertility can't really be seperated, can they?

London | MyFavouritePlace | Isa |’A Junk Shop’

Psynopsis MyFavouritePlace London Isa Jacob
Today MyFavouritePlace comes from Isa – editor in chief of 160grams - who also studies art history in London, speaks 4 or 5 languages, is crazy about Alexander McQueen, has an amazing vintage shoe and book collection, knows about cool, new designers and inhabits a wonderful creative and sparkling mind – and I simply adore her. So naturally I wanted to know what her favourite place in London is… and no, it's not her home – that's just me roaming through her stuff, asking: "Can I take a picture of this, and of this, and oh! of these…"*

My favourite place in London is… too hard to choose! I tend to prefer walks or streets to determined places - the highwalks between the Barbican and London Bridge, where you overlook the city as if you were in the Jetsons' but are still overlooked by skyscrapers and the beautiful antique bookshops' street, Cecil Court, come to mind here. However, if I really had to choose one place it would be a "junk shop" on White Conduit Street, off Chapel Market. It does not even have a name, because it needs to be found, not to be looked for...

It's special because… "Its finest treasures are never discoverable at first glimpse; they have to be sorted out from among a medley of bamboo cake-stands, Britannia-ware dish-covers, turnip watches, dog-eared books (!), ostrich eggs, typewriters of extinct makes, spectacles without lenses, decanters without stoppers, stuffed birds, wire fire guards, bunches of keys, boxes of nuts and bolts, conch shells from the Indian Ocean, boot trees, Chinese ginger jars and pictures of Highland cattle", as George Orwell wrote in 1946. Fact is, the description still fits! Unlike so-called vintage shops, you feel almost attacked by piles of plates, taxidermy, books, clothes flying from the roof: it is really exciting to wait for the special object to find you rather than the contrary, all the while holding your breath in fear of breaking something and having a conversation with the owner or her clients.

The best time to come is… don't come too late. There are no fixed opening times, which makes the shop even more special though. Come before a masquerade night to find the perfect prop. Come on Wednesday so you can then stroll on Camden Passage and look at the antiques. Come in the winter so you can find a perfect fur (yes, you still find astrakan and not those terrible 'vintage' fake furs). Or come any given time to feel like it's not really 2012.

Don't miss to… eat at the newly opened Bill's near Angel station; Camden Passage has some cute restaurants and coffee-shops as well (like Kipferl, the Austrian bakery) but they tend to get overcrowded, especially during the weekend. See something at Sadler's Wells. Have brunch on Exmouth Market. Have a pub crawl in the area, because trust me, there are plenty not to be missed, especially going back towards Clerkenwell!

I love to travel to... Turin. People tend to forget about Turin and go to Milan instead, which means it is luckily not so touristy. It is a magical city, a mix of Paris, Vienna and Italy without any of their negative sides. It is said to be the centre of both the Black and the White Magic triangles... Dario Argento filmed his horrors in Turin, Nietzsche went mad there, it was the city of the kings but it is also the city of Fiat. It has the best - and often unexpected - museums, like the Lombroso, dedicated to the inventor of criminology or the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, one of the finest contemporary art museums in Europe. All in all, it is a fantastic destination where both people and architecture are elegant and distinguished. Baroque churches, Art Nouveau mansions, Rationalist squares... Also, it is the city of chocolate and the food is absolutely unbelievable!

I love to shop at… Illamasqua.

The best thing I bought lately was... a 90s Blumarine long, black velvet dress with black swan feathers around the neck.

My current favourite read is… anything by Antonin Artaud. Theatre, poetry, musings - I will never grow tired of it.

*We did go to the vintage shop in White Conduit Street, and it is an incredible shop, exactly as Isa describes it – perfect for treasure hunting, but very dark and difficult to photograph without flash.

Psynopsis V&A Ballgown Exhibition Atsuko Kudo
If you love your fashion and you have a chance to come to London you shouldn't miss the 'Ballgowns' exhibition at the V&A... It's all happening in the beautifully restored domed court of 'Gallery 40', and up in the mezzanine gallery you can have a happy mental dance in dresses by Felicity Brown, Giles Deacon, Burberry, Mark Fast, Holly Fulton, Craig Lawrence, Vivienne Westwood and and and… Over 60 'to-die-for' pieces – of which my favourites were Gareth Pugh's metallic leather loop dress and Atsuko Kudo's gold printed latex dress. Now that I've seen what's possible with latex I think my wardrobe is missing an essential material… ♥ ♥ ♥

Red hair and green are supposed to attract each other, but I'm finding green preeetty diffult. Olive, or 'military green' is fine, but 'green green'… Still found some treasured objects…

1) Zara's netty pumps. They looked so good when I bought them, but I didn't realise that one shoe was bigger than the other… which leads to a strange, limpy walk - interrupted by scouring the floor to find the lost shoe (the plaster in the back did not help one bit). Bicycle favourites only.
2) I think green cosmetics are actually just as nice as white ones.
3) Aesop Geranium balm needs an extra picture… smells so fresh and delicious, I use it for hands, body, face, the cat and door hinges… and make sure I never run out.
4) Fortnum & Mason teas rock my world and keep me awake. Favourite? Darjeeling.
5) 8-year-old Sarah's self-made turtle… Children are the true artists.
6) Monday morning face, wannabe gravity defiant, every-day skinnies, far too rarely worn blouse and Australian headgear. ♥ ♥ ♥

London | MyFavouritePlace | Fiona | Brick Lane

Psynopsis MyFavouritePlace Brick Lane London Fiona
I actually had to to a little race for this interview because when I asked Fiona if she wanted to take part in the MFP series she was just packing her things to move to Copenhagen. ("Wohaa, that's so sudden – and WHY Copenhagen??" - "I know, I visited a friend there and thought it's a great city, so I decided to move there." Dang, I just love people who live their life on a whim…)

But as Fi knew exactly what her favourite London place (or rather area) is we met up (in Rough Trade where you cannot only get good music but also great coffee), and then we went on a stroll and she showed me some of her favourite street art…
Psynopsis MyFavouritePlace Brick Lane Streetart

Psynopsis MyFavouritePlace Brick Lane Streetart

Psynopsis MyFavouritePlace Brick Lane Streetart

Psynopsis MyFavouritePlace Brick Lane London Fiona Streetart

My favourite place is… Brick Lane
It’s special because… Brick Lane is where my London adventure started and current adventure will end. If you avoid it during busy periods, you can spot amazing street art, meet great locals and hipsters and end your evening on a good pint. It is one of the few places free from massive chains and full of independent stores.
The best time to come is… When the sun is out, early afternoon, midweek. Grab a friend and a coffee. Or late afternoon on a Sunday to catch the end of day deals from the Sunday Up-Market.
Don't miss to…
… do take photo booth photos in Rough Trade East.
… walk the length of Brick Lane and see the difference from being a curry touting business to the home of some of the best vintage right up to the top where you find all the drunk hipsters eating late night beigels.
… see the Malarky street art and Whitechapel Art Gallery.
… order Swedish tea and kladkakka cake from Fika.
… drink in Mason & Taylor and sample all their beers and cause trouble. Buy from Tatty Devine, Rokit, Rough Trade, Blitz Vintage, The Lazy Ones and Lik+Neon.

I couldn't part with… Friends, my family and photographs of both.
My favourite smell is… Fresh mint in a cocktail or when it rains in a hot country.
I love to travel to… Places where I can find hipsters and be their friend.
My favourite city is… Every city is my favourite. Hopefully Copenhagen.
The best thing I bought lately was… A hoola hoop and a Mark Pawson x Tatty Devine Fluorescent Pink Snot necklace (both are great conversation starters).
Cat or Dog?… Cat, I will miss the cat Jandl who lives with me a lot when I move.

Big Thanks to Fi for taking part (can-not wait to interview her on her favourite places in Copenhagen).
