Psynopsis Kate McAuley at Tate Modern

Psynopsis Kate McAuley and Sabine Menzel at Tate Modern
Thanks to Kate's wonderful Tate Modern membership card I had the luxury to avoid all queues and finally got to see the Yayoi Kusama exhibition – which is preeeetty mind-blowing. I guess as an artist you need a degree of obsession, but she really is way out there – not only because of 'the sex thing'* and all the dots and because she has been living in a mental hospital for the past 35 years... Her infinite creativity is just beautiful to behold. Maybe you've already been or seen her art somewhere else, but if not and you have the chance - it's well worth a visit.

The Tate member's café was also the perfect place to interview Kate about her favourite places in London – which will follow soon – with proper, not only oh-look-we-can-see-ourselves-in-the-window views. ♥ ♥ ♥

Yayoi Kusama exhibition, Tate Modern London, until 5th June 2012. (Sadly no photography allowed)

*which to me seems more a fertility theme, but then, sex and fertility can't really be seperated, can they?

I'm sure living in a mental hospital for 35 years brings a new perspective on everything in life. How fascinating!

It seems to be more like a protected hotel... she's got her studio and assistants and everything there.

oooh, i went to the tate once and almost died. i just loved it. LOVED IT!

i don't know this artist's work all that well. but when i see dots, i think of her. i had no idea she lived in a mental institution. YIKES! i hope she is ok! and i hope she is getting the money that is paid for her works! her works command some high prices!

Oh, I think she's quite in charge of her life. There was a great article in the NY Times, fittingly called Kusama Dot Com.

I would love to see this! How intriguing to choose to live in a psychiatric institution for THAT long!

Hope your week is off to a great start! :) xoxo

Kusama's Infinity Dots Mirrored Room (1996) is part of the permanent exhibition of the contemporary art museum of the city I recently moved to.

I would say that the feeling of infinity in the mirrored room is of great consolation to my soul of -placeless- immigrant.

I have seen her work before and also want to see this exhibition too. Looks like the view from the members cafe is the best also. Xxxx
