While John Travolta's girlfriend is causing havoc at the East coast I've been crying my eyes out because Henry had disappeared… (We did find him eventually, having sat in a tree for 70 hours in freezing temperatures. Silly cat! And when a fireman risked his life trying to get him down he took the plunge himself… Double silly cat!!)... Reminding myself about the fragility of happiness and how important it is to appreciate all the good things in our life.

But before I go all preachy on you… Lets go shopping – because I think I have found my favourite retail place in Berlin: Andreas Murkudis. An amazingly white and wide concept store with seriously great labels. But then, as times are, perhaps I mainly fell in love with its calm, orderly and peaceful atmosphere.

To all of you struck by Sandy – Stay dry, stay safe! ♥ ♥ ♥

♥ | The Spy Who Liked Me

Psynopsis Archie Grand notebook
Notebooks… How many do you have? Doris Lessing, eat your pen, I've got zillions…There's the one for general thoughts and ideas, and the one for very important thoughts and ideas, one for travel infos, one for restaurants and food, one for gardening, one for knitting, one for interior design inspiration, one for pretty pictures from magazines… And yesterday I received this. I mean, I always needed one for 'Secret agents I met and liked'. No? Yes!!

Are you a notebook freak like me? ♥ ♥ ♥

"They are hideous!"
"Mmmh, I don't know… I kind of like them. And they're flat… i.e. comfortable."
"I would not go out with you wearing these!"
"Really? Oh dear, have I totally lost it?!"
"Totally! When I see a girl coming into a bar with cowboy boots it makes me want to puke."

Sarah and my morning discussion about my old cowboy boots. I really have a soft spot for them, but then maybe my brain is turning marshmellow. Whaddyasay – ban to the prairie? ♥ ♥ ♥

P.S. Yap, totally stuck in the boots theme...
P.P.S. Big Thanks for Sarah for taking a picture of me in the painful item.

When I arrived in Berlin my friend Katja (who has a beautiful bookshop I really need to show you soon) gave me 3 booklets with the newest cafés, clubs, shops, hotels and bars in town. The place is bopping!… Making me run around like a wide-eyed child: "Look! There's another new shop; and this area has changed so much!" I just love how people do their thing here (and rents being still relatively cheap in many areas making it possible)… Like Britta's shop/studio. Because it's a shop and her workplace you can actually see her designing and working on the clothes she sells. (Plus, you can ask her a multitude of questions and chew her ear off while taking photos of the beautiful surroundings and oohing and aahing at the cute designs.) Yes, it was hard to get over the disappointment that I didn't manage to squeeze myself into the bunny sweater, but instead I've now reserved a t-shirt with the melancholic looking koala for all my nieces and nephews. ♥ ♥ ♥

Beauty | Don’t Wash Your Face!

Psynopsis Beauty Skincare
Skinwise everything went absolutely haywire with the move… Itiskillingme! No matter how much I cream, my face feels dry and itchy. Then, the other day we had someone for the heating here and on the way out he said: "You know, we've got really hard water here. Destroys everything – pipes, washing machines, skin…". Damn you, hard water! I did find a lot of advise on the net… e.g. insert a water filter system (£2000 quid, mmmh), or the cheaper option: 'Don't wash your face. Do not use water!'* Hmmh… I've heard of the idea, but honestly, how can you not wash your face? The idea is to use oil instead, which could be fine, but what about showering and washing your hair… I mean, are you washing your face? With water??? Any tips or experiences? ♥ ♥ ♥

*I also found: 'Use cat litter to scrub your face.' Really?!?

Life | The Café Question

Psynopsis Bullys Bakery Berlin
I might at times have gotten on my German friends' nerves with my constant outcries of how much I love everything British – the civilized manners, the mild winters, the rain (give me a mild, moist day instead of a crispy, sunny one anytime)… But a few things I never got to grips with: the evasive summers (will it appear this year? maybe tomorrow? maybe next week? Oooh no!, it’s autumn again)… And pubs. So cosy, so stuffy – I never felt the love. It's true, London is full of cafés these days, but you need the lifestyle to go with it… The idea of time. Leisure. A café is all about sitting around and chatting, checking out others, maybe flirting a bit, having another cup of coffee… I've missed this a lot. Pubs or cafés – what warms your heart? ♥ ♥ ♥

Yes, still wearing the same old blouse and sweater; kinda like the combination.

Clothes? Outfits?? After all these weeks spent in workwear I hardly remember how to put a coherent top and bottom together. But the vestments are now out of the boxes and putting some thought into what-to-wear can be good for the soul, too... I love the whole cropped thing, and just diiieeed for Dries van Noten's organza/wool aka sheer/solid combinations – but being still more in builder than lady who lunches mode here's my berlinified version. ♥ ♥ ♥

Living without heating, warm water and sleeping on the (pretty hard) Ikea pull-out sofa* probably qualifies as 'slumming it' – so I'm balancing the situation with some shiny new white bedclothes… striped on one side, dotted on the other. Cute. And bedding needs to be white, don't you think? ♥ ♥ ♥

*Retrospective Sorry to all our guests who've endured it, and the shame - even after getting rid of my 20 years Vogue and Harpers Bazaar collection (my heart did cry) and a ton of clothes we couldn't fit our bed into the moving van.

I don't know if this photo should be called 'Skinnies forever', '3 cigarettes are better than 1' or 'Fashion Weeks are sooo exhausting'... I dug it out of my archive after reading a comment on the Sartorialist about 'loving the dude with the Elvis hair'… Well, how can we not love Keegan Singh's inimitable style? "Find your archetype and stick to it", he says. Oui oui, je agree. ♥ ♥ ♥

Life | Good-Bye & Hello

Psynopsis Sarah with Cat

Psynopsis Cat in Garden
'allo 'allo! A few days ago I tweeted a feeble 'I'm not dead', really!, because for us bloggers it can be a bit hard to get that not using the social media doesn't mean we cease to exist. And while I was so very invisible here I actually learned a few things there - like carpet laying is a bitch, old houses can be SO dirty (I never want to see a cleaning rag again, and also, could I have a new pair of hands, please) and there are some muscles in my body I didn't know could actually develop, so yay for that.

Yes, it was sad to leave our English idyll of faded roses and fireplaces, but arriving in Berlin was so lovely – catching up with friends and family, beautiful summer weather... also, the cats haven't fallen into the old, frog-invested pool yet, and we're reunited with Sarah (who moved before us and was totally delighted when her parents told her that they had decided to come to Berlin, too. 'Brrrr, can't get away from them!')

My head is still spinning, and every morning I wake up with a huge list on my mind of all the things I have to tackle and to organise – but I also want to discover the city. Berlin has changed so much since I moved away 12 years ago… A lot to discover. ♥ ♥ ♥
